After being arrested at the age of 17 for shooting a man, De'Jon found himself faced with the possibility of being tried as an adult for his crime. Like many young men, he needed guidance, education and a support network to get back on track, not incarceration in adult-like prisons.
This video tells the story of De'Jon and two caring adults in his support network who connected him with the opportunities he needed.
ELM worked together with the Annie E. Casey Foundation to tell this story as part of their Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), which celebrated its 25th year in 2017. The video debuted at the 2017 JDAI National Inter-Site Conference before an audience of juvenile justice professionals in May. De'Jon's story is on the Casey Foundation’s YouTube channel and is also available to the public free of charge for educational screenings.
